USA TODAY – "10 states report outbreak of respiratory illness in kids"

According to USA Today and all major news organizations, a virulent virus is rapidly spreading across the country. 12 states have seen cases at this point, and as many as 15% of infected children have been hospitalized, primarily due to breathing difficulties.

The number of hospitalizations could be “just the tip of the iceberg in terms of severe cases,” Mark Pallansch, director of the CDC’s Division of Viral Diseases, told CNN.

This virus – enterovirus D68, is typical in that is similar to what the medical community sees during the cold and flu season, but atypical in that we are seeing cases much sooner than the cold and flu season that usually begins soon after Halloween, and also the number of hospitalizations is far greater with this virus than with the common cold.  “There are about 100 types of illnesses in the enterovirus family, which affect about 10 million to 15 million Americans each year”, the CDC said.

Dr. Christine Nyquist, medical director of infection control at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said the hospital sent samples to the CDC from patients with respiratory illness. Around 75% were confirmed to be EV-D68.  Colorado has seen more then 900 cases of this virus since August 18th.

The reason health officials are concerned this year is that there have been so many hospitalizations.

“That’s the scary part — the unpredictability, I think,” Nyquist said.

Health Alert: Ebola Virus "inevitable" in US

Since March, the news of the Ebola outbreak in west Africa has startled and shocked many of us. To date, this deadly virus is responsible for over 700 deaths, and those numbers are expected to double over the coming weeks as an additional 1400 diagnoses have been made.

I have been overwhelmed by the sacrifice of International Aid Workers who have served the needs of the sick and dying of Africa and have themselves been stricken with the illness.

I have also become deeply saddened by the loss of so much life.

You may be concerned about the possibility this virus could travel to Europe and to the United States.

Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Center for Disease Control, spoke just days ago on Capital Hill and stated:

“It’s the first time we’re having to deal with it here in the United States and that’s not merely because of the two people who became ill caring for Ebola patients and were brought back to the U.S. by their organization. That’s primarily because we are all connected and inevitably there will be travelers, American citizens and others who go from these three countries — or from Lagos if it doesn’t get it under control — and are here with symptoms.”

Others have commented in the news recently that the risk of Ebola becoming a national health crisis is ‘slight’, but there is a probability our country will see cases.

I would strongly suggest, as you might guess, that we all eat healthier, get more exercise,and  drink plenty of clean water so that our immune systems are at peak performance, no matter if Ebola comes to this country or not!  If it’s not Ebola, it will be a new strain of the influenza virus, or something else eventually.

I would also suggest using your immune boosting formulas as part of your daily regimen throughout this upcoming cold and flu season.

There is no mystery about how the body fends off the flu and other viruses. Give the body what it needs and it does the work itself!

Alternatively, our results could be explained by temporary nonspecific immunity after influenza virus infection, through the cell-mediated response or, more likely, the innate immune response to infection.”

Not only did it not work – like I warn the public every single year – those children who got the flu shot suffered a massive 550% rate of respiratory illnesses in the months following the flu shot compared to the children who received the placebo.

This is staggering.

New Flu Virus Will Hit Harder than Swine Flu

The Japanese government Friday confirmed the country’s first outbreak of a high-risk bird flu in three years, though it stressed that there was no evidence the disease had spread beyond chickens. The report came two weeks after Hong Kong reported the first human case there since 2003.

From the White House: No Flu Shot for Sasha and Malia

President Barack Obama this past weekend declared the swine flu outbreak a National Emergency, to cope with any surge of patients, the White House says. The declaration Saturday increased concerns, and panicky reactions, to a disease now affecting nearly every nook and cranny of the world.

Then today came a bolt from out-of-the-blue. Robert Gibbs, the White House Press Secretary, said Obama’s daughters will not receive the vaccine based on their profile.   Apparently, according to him,

…only children with an impaired immune system are supposed to take the vaccine.

I don’t think this is what the media is reporting …

In my office, I have been told by parent after parent that local health officials are coming into the elementary schools next week to administer the H1N1 vaccine to all of the school children. Now, it is obvious we need to protect our children – and ourselves. In last Friday’s health alert, Swine Flu Spreading from Schools, schools are a breeding ground for H1N1.

But forced vaccination is not the right way to go about providing that protection. I think the risks far outweigh the “supposed” benefits.
